![]() This organization has established a strong reputation throughout the years, and as a result, it has been able to maintain a loyal staff and a satisified customer base.
The company’s roots tie back to 1872, when Byron Jackson, a then-31-year-old inventor, founded The Byron Jackson Company in Woodland, Calif. By using innovative techniques, he was able to build a strong name for himself, and less than a decade later, he moved operations to San Francisco, where resources from the larger city allowed his engineers to develop the first deep-well turbine pump. Jackson retired in 1913, and by that time, his name was synonymous with innovation, and his company, primed for expansion, lived on. A number of acquisitions allowed the company to establish an oil tools division in 1929, and its team began well cementing. Roughly one decade later, Mid-Continent and Permian Basin oil strikes prompted the company’s team to build an oil tool manufacturing plant in Houston, Texas, further expanding operations. During the early 1950s, the organization spent a great deal of effort acquiring a number of its partners and competitors. In 1956, it was acquired by Borg-Warner a move that added strength to its fracturing services and allowed it to continue to expand geographically throughout the following decades. Over time, a total of 40 service districts (covering all major oil fields in the US) were formed, and operations spread to more than 20 countries across the world, including Canada, Argentina, and Australia. The turn of the century brought along more good news for the team at BJ Services. As operations continued to grow and the organization gained a more experienced staff, well-timed acquisitions put it in a good position. In 2004, the company’s team opened a 120,000-square-foot research and training center just outside Houston. The investment doubled the amount of space available for product and employee development, which should prove promising well into the future. A range of opportunities BJ Services is one of the world’s leading petroleum-industry service providers. Today, with locations in more than 50 countries, the company offers its employees many opportunities to see the world, and because it offers such a broad range of services, a wide assortment of career opportunities are available to staff members willing to work their way up the corporate ladder. It is this aspect of the company’s structure that guarantees much of its staff stays with it for the long term. And this, in turn, helps ensure that customers always receive the best quality service, since employees are knowledgeable. The company’s team is well aware of the domino effect, and as a result, it is fully dedicated to offering continuous local-, regional-, and corporate-level training courses. These classes teach employees everything from how to operate a 3,000 hydraulic horsepower pump to how to use advanced 3D models to determine fracture geometry. Courses such as these, complemented by BJ Services’s numerous worldwide locations and its career-advancement programs, help ensure every employee eager to advance has the opportunity to do so within the company. What’s ahead for its team In December 2009, the company’s Scotland division announced the launch of its second graduate certificate program, project management. The program, which targets employees in the process and pipeline services group, is the equivalent Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level of a standard BA or BS degree. A group of 20 delegates gathered at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland late last year to kick-off the first session. Roughly half of these employees work locally, but the other half are from far-reaching corners of the world. Les Graves, the company’s process and pipeline services product line manager, spoke well of the program. “I am excited about the prospect that in July 2010, the process and pipeline services group could have more than 30 of our engineering and management staff with the equivalent of a degree in project management,” he said in a press release. “The benefit to our clients, and the way it will differentiate us from our competitors, will be fantastic.” Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based solutions provider that services oil and gas operators across the world, acquired BJ Services earlier this year. With more than 35,000 employees in 90 countries across the world, Baker Hughes is a global entity, and with its team’s help, BJ services is now well positioned to achieve future success. |
