Clinical Informatics New Employee Orientation Program

Clinical informatics deals with storage and management of medical records using various techniques. Different elements such as computer science, biomedical informatics and information technology are all combined to create a unique system that holds important health records. Doctor’s offices, hospitals, and healthcare facilities would utilize such technologies on a regular basis. Anyone hired to work in this position may be required to complete some form of orientation that provides details on the importance of related job duties and health record confidentiality elements.

Depending on the healthcare setting any form of new employee orientation training will vary. In some cases the job title or position will vary but elements related to clinical informatics will be intact. You may be required to know certain forms of technology such as software applications, how to retrieve and store data, and how to security access it and forward it when necessary. Such information may vary depending on the amount of patient information the healthcare facility is in charge of withholding. This information is often considered sensitive since personal patient information is included such as address, age, health history, medications taken, Social Security numbers, and so forth.

Some employers may want you to have experience working in the healthcare field but certain elements related to clinical informatics may be learned on the job. This may depend on clinical background needed but sectors such as the government, insurance provider, academic for research purposes and other areas related to the medical field often require some sort of knowledge related to clinical recordkeeping and management. On the job training can include working with groups of people to obtain certification through training set for a certain amount of time or even formal training that includes hand-on experiences through college and university programs, some of which are available online.

There are certification programs as well that may or may not be required by the employer. Some employers offer them as part of orientation training. You may have the option to complete them online, in-person or both. As a health professional you may need to obtain additional trainings throughout your career to maintain certifications earned. You can also choose to continue your education part time while being employed. Various employers in the medical industry provide incentives for employees that take on this initiative. As a newly created position many companies are adapting to the orientation structure is likely to change overtime as well.
